Learning With Lego Train Sets
Lego train sets can be used for many different purposes. First of all they can be used for simple play. Kids can build trains and push them along the tracks that you set up. Secondly, these train sets can be used for learning skills like following directions, learning colors, learning shapes and learning cause and effect. Parents can enhance the educational value of their kid's Lego train sets by creating activity cards for their kids to play with. These cards can depict train track layouts or train shapes that their kids need to replicate with blocks.

3. Draw your ideas for Lego trains on graph paper first. Use markers, color pencils or crayons to create your designs.
4. Create plans of your favorite creations so that you can recreate them later on.
5. Store extra small pieces in plastic zipper bags.

Art Projects - Lego Train Sets
One fun activity you can do with your Lego train sets is to work on art projects. There are a lot of different art projects that you can do, however, the project you select will depend on the age and skill level of your child. An easy art project you can complete is to build a Lego train and then have your child trace it onto construction paper or drawing paper. Let them trace the train in many different positions to demonstrate how the shape changes based on what direction you look at the train from. An intermediate art project you can complete is to have your child build a Lego train and then have them draw their train design on paper. If you are looking for a great holiday project, consider building a Lego train garland for your Christmas tree. As you can see there are a lot of fun projects you can complete with your kids using little more than Legos, paper, crayons, markers and imagination.
Tip: What is great about Legos is that they are easy to wash off. This means that you can use your Lego pieces as stamps. Just dip the side in a washable paint and stamp the shape on paper. Then wash off the Lego.
Keeping Your Lego Train Pieces Clean
One of the best things about Lego train sets is their easy to clean surface. Being that they are made from non-porous plastic, Legos are really easy to clean. For pieces that don’t have decals or motorized parts, you can submerge the pieces in a bucket of warm soapy water. You can scrub them with a vegetable scrubber or a toothbrush. For pieces with decals or water sensitive add-ons you will want to use a damp cloth. Work around the sensitive areas gently and allow to dry thoroughly before playing with the pieces.
Tips: Organic cleaners can also be used to keep your Lego train pieces clean. These products are made from natural chemicals and enzymes that are extracted from plants. They do not have toxic fumes and they are safer for use around kids and pets.

Ashley, that is what I use to see when I went to my son's house, the trains and lego's all over the place. Then I found http://www.toy-train-table-plans-store.com where we could build a train table or playtable for 75% less than you found in the store. The plans were only about $10 and we built the table in 3 hours.
Legos are a lot of fun to play with and learn with. However, with all the handling that they get they can get grimy and dirty. It is a good idea to wash them with a mild detergent and to them soak them in a solution of bleach and water for abotu a half hour once a month.
Bleach is okay, as long as it is used in small quantities and diluted significantly in water. I used it as a disinfectant when I worked in the fast food industry, so if it was hazardous to your health it wouldn't be allowed. Usually a cap full to a gallon of water is enough to be effective.
I didn't know that. Thank you for the safety information.
If you have young children you need to examine your toy train parts frequently to see if there are any loose parts or broken pieces.

Nothing at all keeps my son as entertained as his legos and other building blocks. He mixes them all up and builds things that use them all at once. The playroom floor is literally covered in them all the time.
